Chump Lady Gets Hip to Social Media

Hey, just to let you know we’re getting hip to the information age here… albeit slowly, grudgingly, and with bad morning hair. Chump Lady is proud to present… ta da! A Facebook page!  Like it (it’s quite empty now but it exists), post on it, link stories you find inspiring or stupid. Tweets I tweet will go there (I hope… will need some help figuring that out), and articles will get up there too. For now, probably some from the vaults, but new content too eventually.

Also, I’m making some progress on the Chump Chat forum. It’s built, I’m tweaking it with a developer right now. It will be modest at first, but with your input, we’ll improve on it! (I want to make an unicorn emoticon for BBpress — any WP geeks out there with a plug-in or ideas, contact me…)

I’d like to give a big shout out to Nord — who is CL’s social media guru. She single handedly nagged me to create a social media plan, learn to tweet (which she helps with as well), and will be overseeing the FB page start up. If you’re in Europe and you need a kickass media professional, email me and I’ll put you in touch.

So, let’s take the “Leave a cheater, gain a life” message to the masses! Whether they want it or not. Probably not… but at least they can enjoy the cartoons.

  • Hey, if we can make requests, I find it very difficult to express myself when writing about cheaters without a vomit emoticon. If that can be added someday, I’d love it!

  • Congratulations on the hard work.
I removed my Facebook page a while back. I didn’t need to see photos of the OW or who she was Facebook friends with.
But I am interested in the forum and possibly a section where chumps can find other chumps who live near them?
I am in NY and would love to find people nearby who understands the impact of what it is like to be a chump. I have met many divorced people but it just isn’t the same. This is something you have to live through to understand.

    • Rebecca,

You can “block” specific people on FB. Once they are blocked, you will no longer see any mention of them, and they will not be able to see you, or see any of your posts on your friends’ pages.

  • Interesting. Will totally expose us. I got into big trouble just writing honest letters that exposed the affair. There was nothing offensive in them but the truth.
Good for exposing chump lady though. You deserve every success as you help so many.

    • Baci, I think there are ways to be anonymous. If not, it will still be a place to go and read and get alerts.

  • I “liked” the page. It might be better, though, if this was in a “group” format, rather than created as a “page”. I can’t “share” things to a page, only to groups. Might make for a more interactive page.

    • Also, groups can be tailored for privacy. You can have a group be open, closed, or private, so general public won’t be able to see all the posts without joining the group, or being invited. From facebook:

Closed: Anyone on Facebook can see the group name, its members and people invited to join the group, but only members can see posts in the group. To join a closed group, a member needs to add you, or you can ask to join. People may see when you join or are invited to a closed group, such as in news feed or search. Learn more.

Secret: Non-members can’t find these groups in searches or see anything about the group, including its name and member list. The name of the group will not display on the timelines of members. To join a secret group, you need to be added by a member of the group.

      • Hi Dawn,

Those are great suggestions. Let me see if I can make it a group. My ignorance about the ways of FB is apparent.

Do you know if there is a way to delete a page or a profile? I’ve tried this before and more than one CL page exists. Arrgh.

        • Sure:

How do I delete a Page?

          To delete your Page:

1.From the top of your Page, click Edit Page
          2.Select Manage Permissions
          3.Click Delete [Your Page Name]

You will have the option to unpublish or delete your Page. If you choose to delete your Page, please note that its removal is permanent.

  • Why didn’t I think of that I run that for the boys footy teams. Only the team can see it and I must invite them. Hard though for chump lady to deal with and doesn’t give her the exposure she deserves.

  • Thanks CL and Nord! I’ve only been on FB for about a month and have already gotten myself in trouble, so probably wouldn’t post on a public page. I don’t think I’m that brave. But love the idea of Chump Chat. And really hope that CL’s message goes global.

    • I imagine a FB page would be more useful for popular culture musings about infidelity and associated issues, rather than getting into our nitty gritty personal issues. That is best left to an anonymous page, such as right here. 🙂

But for discussing things like the zumba trial (down with pervs!), etc., that would be the perfect forum for raising awareness and promoting public scorn of their actions.

  • Hope you will keep the CL page here just as it is. FB kind of wide open and well I like that these postings are kind of private. Not too many people outside of my immediate circle know about the maggiage troubles I have at this time. One of the reasons I started a FB page is that I wanted the OW to see me. Lots of pictures of my husband and I several comments on timeline regarding our marriage. Maybe it worked of late the secret cell phone seems to be a thing of the past and his FB page deactivated.

  • Can’t wait to start fighting with folks so I can be banned from yet another site. How about you enlist Deeply Sacred from SI, Melody from MB, and Almost Recovered from TAM as mods.
