Happy Valentine’s Day for Those Who Celebrate

Happy Valentine’s Day!

you suck valentine

Happy Smug Coupled Persons day! Or Discount Chocolate’s Eve, depending on how you celebrate.

Re

As promised, here are the winners to this year’s Infidelity Valentines Contest! Once again, it was difficult to cull the submissions. So much snark and cleverness.

In the limerick division we have:

She said she’d rather be alone,
But cheated with my Canadian clone!
She gave away thrills,
But left me the bills,
I am free and she’ll never atone.

JeffWashington

I love the whole story arc of this. We’ve got cheating, theft of marital assets, and zero sorry — all in five lines!

There is just one of the joys
after psychopaths make you their toy
in learning who’s who
saying g’bye to the zoo
and learning just who to enjoy

FT

Life lesson! Cull your social register and find people who share your values. Love it.

You know a fuckwit named Em.
She was hot to jump on your stem.
She cheated WITH you
She’ll cheat ON you too
You should’ve heeded this apothegm.

vetbod8472

You had me at apothegm, Vetbod8472.

In the haiku division we have…

they slept in my bed
never changed the dirty sheets
there’s not enough bleach

Spinach@35

So much eeew.

They are all the same,
“Rules for thee and not for me.”
Fuck that shit. I’m out.

YouCantPolishATurd

Huzzah!

Thank you, CN for all the great entries and kudos to our winners. But wait! There’s more! In a special Valentine’s episode of Tell Me How You’re Mighty — Sarah and I have read some of the entries on the podcast, listeners read their poetry, AND we have a few dramatic recitations with swelling violin music. I think this might be our best episode yet.

Need more? We’ve got a PUNK ROCK SONG! That might be next year’s contest… song lyrics.

Check it out! I discuss my hatred of carnations, and Sarah and I share our Worst Valentine’s Days ever. (Sarah wins.)

Happy Valentine’s Day, CN! What are you all doing? Got any contending stories to compete with Sarah?

My boyfriend is taking me to the place we went on our anniversary. I’m excited because this is a special place for us and last time they had a really interesting drink that I hope is still there (I don’t know if it was a special one or a regular menu item.)

When I was single I made V day all about self love. Took myself out to dinner, movies, etc. Don’t forget self love is still important especially when we’re cleaning up after a divorce or a D day. Giving yourself some love on Valentine’s day is a reminder that you still matter even when you’re not in a relationship.

I treated myself with dinner at a Japanese place I love. I was sitting at the sushi bar with a spicy novel next to a first (and hopefully last) date. He talked about how much money he made, how much other people made, how lazy his coworkers are, the woman who flew to Korea for him, more about other women, his side hustle making pimple popping videos, and some random drama that wasn’t interesting even on accident. Her whole contribution was “wow, bummer” and “amazing”. He never stopped talking about himself.

Afterwards I returned to my clean, quiet home with the fresh flowers and thought, “I think I like my little life.” Happy Valentine’s Day, y’all.

What am I doing for Valentine’s Day? I am glad you asked. I’m putting my wedding bands on consignment. Wish me luck, and yes, it feels great. (Valentine’s Day was also my confrontation day, so it feels like a bonus round.)

My church had a fundraiser for a school in Kenya. One thing they did was melt down old jewelry and sell the gold and silver for cash to donate. That felt pretty good.

So romantic. Weeks later underground with massages and texts. Happy Valentines to ME! I am proud to be always faithful in no longer allowing someone to use me.

My ex told me he threw my wedding band and his into the river, I guess that was just one more jab at me. Please, I was married to him for 21 years, he pawned them both for a few bucks. Never saw a dime he couldn’t squeeze.

I gave my diamond to my daughter in law to do with as she pleased. She likely sold it to spend the money on the grandson.

Of course Dr Kathy will help you save your marriage. She’ll get 350.00 an hour for trying.
According to her, people only cheat because they don’t know how to communicate and she will teach them how!

The very first thing I learned in school as a psych major is that just because someone has credentials and a practice does not mean that they themselves are wired properly.

I particularly grimaced over the ‘moment of madness’ theme. When I get depressed, stressed, I don’t feel the need to go out and have sex with randoms! Generally I haven’t got the energy but hey ho, I’m not an accountant. My sister is, but I haven’t noticed her using meaningless sex as an outlet either. Her husband and daughter wouldn’t like it if she did. I’m single thanks to the FW who bought me armfuls of expensive red roses on the Valentine’s Day 4 months before he really started treating me like something the cat dragged in! But even when I was married and often depressed, I was able to turn down nookie offers easily and even told the FW about them! This journalist does have a somewhat odd approach to life and she always seems defeated. I feel sorry for her!

I am going out to dinner with a bunch of DivorceCare friends. 😊

I am certain I will have a better time than I ever had going out to dinner with my h when we were married.

Most memorable Valentine’s Day with him? The time we went out to dinner on that day but had been barely speaking to each other for months prior (I later learned that was due his first emotional affair). The evening was tense but when he wouldn’t let up on the “it’s all your fault” and “you are such a problem” spiels I got so angry I walked out of the restaurant!

Yes, I’m trying to give up West Cork yogurts- it’ll be a struggle because they’re lovely and the only sweet treats I have, apart from the occasional bowl of tinned peaches and real cream which I am giving up too, but my yogurts are my favourites! I fasted, prayed the Rosary as usual but I couldn’t get to Mass sadly . I’m more upset about that than V Day. In fact I’m surprised by how unemotional about it I was, I really didn’t mind at all!
Last year, we had said we’d get a Chinese take-away for V Day, but for some reason we didn’t, probably because I was worried about money, as he was giving me less and less housekeeping ( because he was spending more and more of it on his cocaine, booze and slappers probably!). I remember being far more bothered about the lack of money than not doing anything for VDay. He didn’t get me a card but I didn’t get him one either so I didn’t mind! It says a lot, doesn’t it? Perhaps that’s why I couldn’t have cared less about V Day this year!

Good one, fair play to you, I need to stop that as well!
When I had really bad insomnia a few years back, I got a copy of “The Gulag Archipelago” from the library, and would read it, sometimes on and off all night until 7 in the morning! I tell what, it’s a great antidote to self-pity! I felt like crap, absolutely terrible, exhausted but not able to get a wink of sleep but what those poor souls were put through in Stalin’s camps made my sufferings seem trivial!
I recommend reading it, but it’s not light entertainment at all! It’s harrowing!

CL and Sarah, another great podcast! You are a terrific duo. Loved it!!
I want to defend the misunderstood carnation though. I love that it’s such a hardy flower and smells so amazing.
When I was in HS, an all girls parochial one on Long Island, it was traditional on your birthday that your friends would stop by a local florists that was one block from school when they got off the bus.
For fifty cents, you’d buy a carnation ( didn’t have the gaudy colors then, thank God) with a ribbon on it in a little plastic bag with an attached hat pin. We wore uniform blazers, so they would all pin the carnations onto your blazer and you would be weighted down with love and good wishes the whole day long. I wish I had photos of that, but cameras were not the thing back in the early 70’s.
You could be wearing 50 or more carnation corsages all the live long day and it made you feel special. They even had a plastic vial of water attached to the stem that kept them super fresh all day. I just loved that.
Carnations hold a warm place in my heart, not the cheap gas station version with the 4 day old rotisserie hot dog vibe ones. I get that they are looked down on, lol.
When I go to Costco now, I’ll frequently pick myself up a $10 bouquet of got a bad rap “ trash” flowers.
I love that they last weeks, I can walk by and stick my nose in them for a fond memory. I also break up the bouquet and spread a few mini vases around to my bathroom or kitchen so I remind myself all the time that I am loved and I have worth in this world. ( cue Miley’s song, “I can buy myself flowers………!!!”) 🎶🎹

Red roses used to be my favorite. Until early in our marriage when I found a $60 charge on our credit card for two dozen red ones send to a distant state. It was the first of many D days, but that one crushed me like no other because we were only married 5 years, no kids yet and were what I considered madly and passionately in love to one another, at least I was.
Wish I could have read that flag properly, but I forgave him and moved on to decades of infidelity tortures.
Roses are never scented anymore anyway, which is always a disappointment when you know what they can smell like. They are too commercialized now and they are a common cheater prop, majority are probably going to Schmoopies far and wide.
Give me carnations any day, they speak genuine love, not the naugahyde insincere version.
I’m heading out on this Valentine to give blood. Had an 8 year old nephew dx with leukemia this very week, that has just crushed us all. I want to restock the supply he’ll be drawing from.
His name is Ben and when the social worker asked him if he had a best friend, he said it was his little brother, Luke. “ He’s my soul mate”, he told her. It made her cry. 🩵

I’m also very fond of carnations. Pink carnations were my mom’s favorite flowers. I used to send her arrangements of them when I could afford it. When I was too broke for that, I used to pick up a bunch or 2 at the grocery store for her.

I don’t remember my father ever getting her flowers. Not once. Of course, he may have before I was born or when I was too young to remember. His Valentine’s Day gift was a small box of chocolates, one for her, one for me.

My favorite flower is roses, and occasionally I buy myself some.

I like carnations and mums too. I never even got those. He sent me pink roses when our son was born (he was in Vietnam). The next flowers I got was a bouquet of lilies the Sep before he left me on New Years day.

Still don’t know what those flowers were about, but same thing happened to my best friend who got dumped a week after he sent her a huge bouquet of flowers.

Are you a Catholic? You could ask Blessed Carlo Acutis to intercede for Ben in prayer. He was an Italian teenager who died of leukemia when was 15 in the early 2000s, and he must have a miracle attributed to him already seeing as he’s a Blessed. His body is not corrupt and is in a glass coffin in Italy. He’s wearing his jeans and trainers, just like any teenager of our times, but the manner of his death would suggest he’d be an appropriate holy person to ask for intercession for your nephew!
I’ll remember Ben in my prayers too!

I think I blocked this holiday completely out of my head this year. Even when I work part-time in a gift shop that has it splashed all over. I got woken up at 5 a.m. by texts messages from 2 different people who always forget there’s something called time zones. Only one of those texts (from sister) was actually a Valentine’s greeting.

Gonna try to remain sweet today, tho’ I know the sour gonna be seepin’ out by sundown.

Never celebrated Valentine’s Day with POS cheater. He went overseas for 3 weeks each and every year to take part in a music carnival during this period. For 30 years. I supported him as this was also an opportunity for him to see his family. Little did I know that he went to play music and to see how many women he could have sex with.
Towards the end of my marriage, before I discovered what the POS was up to, I realized that I actually enjoyed not having him around and dreaded picking him up from the airport 😅
So this day is like any other day for me. Going for a run after work and then ordering Chinese food for my son and I.

Enjoying the night with friends and church family. I may be single, but I guarantee you nobody is going to hurt my feelings or embarrass me today! There is something to be said for that! On my final D-day in mid-January 2018, I walked out on Mr. Duplicity (we had been together a while, not married, and still had our own places). In the next week I changed my locks, my phone number and eventually killed my email addresses in order to go complete no contact.

Fast forward to late December of that same year, and I get an email from him through my work email address. He must have done some legwork to get it because we had never communicated through our work emails in the past. His message was nothing more than a long sad sausage plea of how lonely he was. His birthday was just around the corner; coincidence I think not!

Even after 11+ months of no contact, it left me reeling and I felt as though I had to start all over again. So, I went to a lawyer and had a “cease and desist” letter drawn up stating that I wanted no further contact from him, and any subsequent attempts would prompt me to pursue legal action on the basis of harassment. Although the letter was strongly worded, in reality, it had few teeth: if he did try to contact me, I could then begin to document his harassment but it wasn’t a slam-dunk that he could be charged with such until I had enough documentation to move forward in a (Canadian) court of law.

Given the holidays, my work schedule etc. the letter wasn’t sent until the end of January 2019. Since the letter was sent by registered mail, Mr. Duplicity had to sign upon receipt. He received it on Valentine’s Day! If that is the only time I ever get to experience karma in regards to Mr. Duplicity, I’m good. Real good.

I now celebrate January 13th (the day I walked out) as my own personal Valentine’s Day. It’s a day for me, and me alone.

The Valentines day prior to D day, cheater got me another set of frilly Walmart underware which by then, I figured out… I was being demeaned…that I was just of use, and I was a vending machine and being intimately threatened and abused. I tossed the cheap set off to the side and my then cheater got enraged. I mean red faced and screaming. He then demanded what he wanted for valentines day, and I walked away. This just helped him want to confess the unknown pick- me dance contestants …so I would KNOW he was special and sparkled for others. It’s a quiet Valentines day today 6 months post divorce, but I got myself the very best European chocolate 🍫 and I’m enjoying it ALONE. I’m in heaven.

Who gifts shoes you ask ? If memory serves me correctly, the New Yorker published a piece years ago about the shoe designer Christian Louboutin. There were only two of his boutiques at that time. And the cheating rich men would establish two different accounts.
The Upper East Side store for the wife. And the downtown one, in Greenwich Village, for the mistress(es). One man’s accounts were mixed up, an employee was sacked and a divorce lawyer was hired.

I got out of work early due to external issues causing us to close early, made a handmade card for my significant other, gave him the card and a gift this evening, and we went to Ash Wednesday services with my mother and a sibling. Small, but sweet. He actually teared up at the card, and came upstairs just to hug me after reading it.

We’re now playing video games and lazing about. Our actual date plans are for this weekend – we’re going to the art museum! At least, hopefully. We’re now extremely busy this weekend, due to added things from both of our families. I just wanted a calm weekend with an art museum date… ah well!

I had a very low-key Valentine’s Day overall, with one exception. It absolutely made my day to see that my limerick won and got top billing(hearing it read on the podcast was icing on the cake!) Thank you all so much!

Other than a bracingly normal day at work it was all self-care all day. Took a walk, ate some pizza rolls, watched some funny videos, worked on a model kit.

All in all it was the best first V-Day since D-Day I could have. Thank you all once again for your continued positivity, hope, (snark), and support!
